PHILADELPHIA The Philadelphia Eagles squandered a chance to take control early Sunday. Good thing the New Orleans Saints gave them plenty more opportunities.
Sam Bradford rebounded from two first-half interceptions in the end zone to throw a pair of touchdown passes, and Fletcher Cox twice caused turnovers on sacks of Saints quarterback Drew Brees as the Eagles broke things open in a 39-17 rout at Lincoln Financial Field.
Bradford finished 32-of-45 passing for 333 yards for the Eagles, who also ran for 186 yards and racked up 34 first downs on a brutal day for Rob Ryan’s Saints defense.
Philadlephia improved to 2-3 with its first home win, staying in the thick of things in the NFC East, while the Saints dropped to 1-4.
The Saints’ fourth turnover and Brees’ third — an interception by Walter Thurmond — set up DeMarco Murray’s 4-yard touchdown with 3:44 to go to put the Eagles up 39-10. Brees threw a meaningless 14-yard touchdown to Brandin Cooks as time expired.
The Eagles racked up 300 yards and 16 first downs by halftime. But their lead was just 10-7 thanks to several red-zone failures, including the two Bradford interceptions and a Riley Cooper drop that helped to hold them to a field goal just before the break.
It was 10-all in the third quarter when the Eagles took control. They drove 80 plays in nine plays for a touchdown. On the Saints’ next offensive snap, Cox got his second strip-sack on Brees and fell on the ball, setting up a 13-yard touchdown pass from Bradford to Brent Celek.
Just like that, it was 23-10 Eagles — Caleb Sturgis wasn’t close with his extra point attempt after the latter TD — and the Saints never really responded.
