Dozens of record high temperatures were set Christmas Day along the East Coast from New York to Florida for the third straight day.
New York City had its warmest Christmas on record, when the temperature reached 66 degrees shortly after midnight in Central Park, the National Weather Service said. John F. Kennedy International Airport (64 degrees) and Islip on Long Island (65 degrees) also set record highs for Dec. 25.
Providence, R.I., broke its record high for Christmas with 64 degrees, breaking the record of 63 degrees set last year and in 1964. Portland, Maine (62) and Wheeling, West Va.(60) also broke longstanding records.
In the South, Atlanta's 75-degree reading was a record for Christmas, as was the 81 degrees in Fayetteville, N.C., and the 82 degrees in Savannah, Ga.
Even locations in Florida and on the Gulf Coast set record highs for Christmas Day: Naples (89), Orlando (86), Tampa (86), Daytona Beach (83), Mobile (79), New Orleans (82) and Houston Hobby (83), according to the weather service.
Friday's high in Naples of 89 also tied the city's record high temperature for all of December.
