Sarah Michelle Gellar talks to 'More' about Buffy, her kids, her marriage and her new gig. Buffy is back, only she's not Buffy anymore but she is goofier, says Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Now 36 and a mother of two, Gellar gleams from the November cover of More magazine, to help promote her new CBS series, The Crazy Ones, a workplace comedy from David E.Kelley about an advertising agency, and co-starring Robin Williams as her father.
The actress formerly known as Buffy the Vampire Slayer says that beloved character isn't coming back, despite recent claims to the contrary about a possible movie. The series was recently ranked eighth on Entertainment Weekly's list of the 100 Greatest TV Shows Ever.
"It was a cultural phenomenon, but the hours were insane," she says. "I could barely make it home to bed."
Her new gig, her first since son Rocky was born a year ago, allows her to be a parent. "In the pilot, I'm in every scene but one, yet I was either with my kids in the morning or there to put them to bed every night we shot," she says.
Time and 11 years of marriage, to actor Freddie Prinze Jr., have helped to loosen up an actress famous for her intensity, ambition and organizational skills.
"I think I'm goofier now," she says. When a bomb scare briefly interrupted the magazine interview, she took it in stride. "I was like, 'Let's go have Bloody Marys!' I would never have said that — even when I was 22," she says.
Being a mom (her daughter Charlotte is 4) and joining a mommy support group has taken up a lot of energy lately, but she still wishes she had more "me time. If I have extra time, I want to be with my kids. I still have that mom guilt. I haven't had a facial since my first child was born."
The secret to her successful marriage? "A separate life. I always say I'm Sarah Michelle Gellar when I work and I'm Sarah Prinze in the other life," she says. "I don't know if there is a secret — if I had a secret, I'd write a book and retire. But we talk. We check in."
The November issue hits newsstands Oct. 22.
