Pastel Makeup for Summer

Pastel makeup is pretty. But edgy? Not a chance. But now subtract the sweetness of shimmer and gloss. And then put the new matte shades against golden skin. Suddenly, pastels look a whole lot sexier. Edgy, even. Go through our gallery and find out how to wear them right.

SMOKY LILAC EYE SHADOW

Lilac eyeshadow can be a bit of a wallflower. When one coat is swept across the lids, it doesn’t say a whole lot. Layering formulas (matte powder over matte cream) is the ticket to creating a power pastel.

COOL PINK LIPSTICK

If matte lipstick is uncharted territory for you, then welcome! There are a few things you should know: First, matte lipstick isn’t as forgiving as gloss. Matte formulas “emphasize dryness everywhere, but especially on the lips,” says makeup artist Troy Surratt. Wear a lip balm at night to seal in moisture and do a lip scrub a few times a week to slough off dead skin. (We like Julep Buff Lip Scrub.)

The next thing you need to know about matte lipstick: It doesn’t budge. It’s simple science—matte formulas have less oil and more wax and pigment than glossy formulas, so they stay on longer. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a sheer matte shade. There’s one more caveat. Matte lipsticks can actually make your lips look smaller (eek!) if you don’t fill them in all the way, says Surratt. Do your pout justice by drawing the color to the very edge of your lips with a lip or concealer brush. And there you have it: cool-girl lips that aren’t going anywhere. (Try Topshop Lipstick in Saint.)

WHITE HOT EYELINER

White eyeliner looks instantly badass on darker skin tones. But on fair skin, it can be a washout. The trick to making the color pop? Pair it with a warm matte bronzer on your cheeks.

White pigments are most intense in a gel or cream formula. If the prospect of a liner brush freaks you out, reach for a creamy gel-pencil combo, like NYX Slide On Waterproof pencil in Pure White. Start by applying a shadow primer across your entire lid, which will help the color stay crisp. Line your upper lashes before adding a dusting of white powder shadow to intensify the color and lock it in place.

LUMINOUS GOLDEN SKIN

Treat matte makeup like you would any other loud beauty statement—don’t overdo it. “If your eyes and lips are matte, your skin should be dewy,” says makeup artist Tom Pecheux. If you want just a hint of sheen, a cream bronzer, like Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base will get you there. Dab it on your cheeks and blend it out toward your temples. For full-on glow, follow the same steps—but with a shimmery liquid bronzer, like Giorgio Armani Maestro Liquid Summer Bronzer .
