NATO Concerned that Russia May Deploy Chemical Weapons in Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated during a NATO Summit on Thursday that the alliance is concerned that Russia might use chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine.

Stoltenberg also stated that NATO members agreed to assist Ukraine, which is not a member of NATO, with medical support, training, and detection equipment to help prepare the country in case Russia deploys chemical or biological weapons.

In a public statement after the conclusion of a NATO Summit in Brussels, Stoltenberg expressed the alliance’s fears that Russia may be preparing to use such weapons, which are banned under the Geneva Convention, because the country has claimed that western powers are planning to use them.

NATO fears Russia may use chemical weapons in Ukraine, will send medical assistance, training

“We are concerned partly because we see the rhetoric and we see that Russia is trying to create some kind of pretext accusing Ukraine, the United States, and NATO allies for preparing to use chemical and biological weapons…and we have seen before that this way of accusing others is actually a way to create a pretext to do the same themselves,” he stated.

US President Joe Biden issued a similar warning on Monday when he stated that Russia is considering using chemical weapons in Ukraine.

Biden said Russia’s false accusations that Kyiv had biological and chemical weapons illustrated that President Vladimir Putin was considering using them himself.

Putin’s “back is against the wall and now he’s talking about new false flags he’s setting up including, asserting that we in America have biological as well as chemical weapons in Europe, simply not true,” Biden said at a Business Roundtable event.

“We are also enhancing allies’ preparedness and readiness for chemical, biological and nuclear threats,” Stoltenberg said, referring to NATO’s assistance to Ukraine.

He stated that NATO itself is also preparing itself for the possibility of a Russian attack in Ukraine by activating its “chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense elements,” as the use of such weapons could have ramifications on neighboring countries which are members of NATO.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of using such weapons in Ukraine already during an address to NATO members during a closed-door session on Thursday.

“This morning, by the way, phosphorus bombs were used. Russian phosphorus bombs. Adults were killed again and children were killed again,” he stated.
He also warned that Russia will “not…stop” with his own country if not thwarted in Ukraine.

“I am sure you already understand that Russia does not intend to stop in Ukraine…Does not intend and will not. It wants to go further,” he stressed.

Zelensky closed his statement by calling on NATO to do more in helping his country in the war against Russia.

“NATO has yet to show what the alliance can do to save people…To show that this is truly the most powerful defense union in the world. And the world is waiting. And Ukraine is very much waiting. Waiting for real actions. Real security guarantees. From those whose word is trustworthy. And whose actions can keep the peace,” he stated.
